Give Stinky Feet the Boot

Face the smelly truth: No matter how finely pedicured, your feet sweat -- as much as a gallon of moisture each week. Don't fret; just follow these tips:

1.Scrub your tootsies daily with a washcloth and antibacterial soap, and dry them thoroughly with a clean towel. Afterward, sprinkle on an odor-preventing foot powder; its mild astringency will help stifle sweat.

2.Clean socks are your best defense. Pure cotton socks are better than wool or those made with fibers that don't breathe. Even better, try a pair made of the new synthetic fibers specially designed to wick away moisture. Check the label for that claim.

3.Take a hiatus from your favorite footwear. A 24-hour break should starve the foul critters who call your clodhoppers home.

4.Apply pit logic. A quick spritz or light coat of antiperspirant every morning will help inhibit sweat. Yes, even on your feet.

5.Relax before bed with a nice cup...er, tub of tea. Tea's tannins work as natural astringents to close off sweat glands. Try this nightly until you see an improvement: Steep two tea bags in a pint of boiling water for 15 minutes. Add two quarts of cool water, and soak your feet for half an hour. Note: If strong teas tint your toes orange, try weaker versions or commercial foot soaks instead.

Treatment for Smelly Feet

Persistent foot odor can indicate a low-grade infection or a severe case of hereditary sweating. In these cases, your doctor may prescribe a special ointment. You apply it to the feet at bedtime and then wrap your feet with an impermeable covering such as kitchen plastic wrap. Soaking your feet in strong black tea for 30 minutes a day for a week can help. The tannic acid in the tea kills the bacteria and closes the pores, keeping your feet dry longer. Use two tea bags per pint of water. Boil for 15 minutes, then add two quarts of cool water. Soak your feet in the cool solution. Alternately, you can soak your feet in a solution of one part vinegar and two parts water.
